Size:
The right size for your poolside cabana will depend on the space you have available as well as the size of your pool. When determining what size of cabana you need, Thomas Woltz suggests keeping your cabana modest so it doesn't overshadow the size of your pool or patio. On average, the most common sizes for a poolside cabana will be 10 by 10 feet, and 12 by 12 feet in a perfect square shape. Larger sizes are also commonly found, as are rectangles or hexagon shapes to suit your unique needs.
Aesthetic:
Depending on your preferences and personal likes, a poolside cabana can fit into almost any aesthetic you may be going for. Some of the more common aesthetic styles for a poolside cabana are a metal frame and roof with a weatherproof fabric wall, or a wooden lattice slatted wall and roof to add shade and allow full airflow. The main purpose of your cabana can be either for providing shade over lounge chairs, or it can be for adding privacy when changing into a bathing suit. The reason why you want a cabana can be a big help in determining the right aesthetic to focus on.
Construction:
Most poolside cabana frames are metal, with the fabric being an outdoor mesh or canvas. This not only helps prevent rust, especially in seaside homes, but the outdoor fabric resists mold and mildew from commonly moist areas. Anooshey Rahim says your cabana should be constructed well to resist being damaged in high winds, or during storms, especially in coastal areas where this is common. Consider anchoring your cabana to the patio around your pool, or opting for a permanent cabana construction instead of a temporary solution.
Material:
The most commonly used material for cabana frames is iron, though steel and other metal composites are used. Wood is also used, and adds a very relaxing island vibe to the area, but can be considerably more costly depending on the wood species chosen. Oak, pine, and cedar are popular choices, as are mahogany and other exotic hardwoods. Rattan, bamboo, or wicker are suitable for some areas, but heavier duty lumber is normally preferred. Fabric walls, shade cloths, or swag will be made of a PVC outdoor fabric or a heavy duty waterproof canvas to resist the sun and the rain.
